Before this temple was built, this Vaarahi Ammavaru (Mother Goddess Vaarahi) had been permanently consecrated by the Guruvugaru (the revered teacher, Brahmashri Kode Sudhakara Sharma garu) at his own home, at the Sri Vaarahi shrine in Alwal. For three years, she became renowned for granting the wishes of devotees who offered special worship there.
While the Guruvugaru was in the process of trying to buy this plot of land for a house, he had a dream in which he was building a temple and consecrating Vaarahi in it. Taking this as a divine calling, during the bhoomi puja (ground-breaking ceremony), a “Sahasra Modaka Yagnam” (a sacred fire ritual with a thousand modakas/sweet dumplings) was performed — a Ganapati homam offered with a thousand modakas. While this yagna was underway, in the yagnashala, Vaarahi and the Kanakamala devotees actually witnessed the Universal Mother (Jaganmatha) appear in living form, and the temple was built and consecrated accordingly.
On the day of the temple’s consecration, as the deity was adorned/decorated during the Guruvugaru’s darshan, the Divine Mother manifested in the form of Kanchikamakshi. In this Kanchikamakshi temple, Kalabhairava also stands as the guardian deity of the sacred site (Kshetra Palaka). Just as Vaarahi and Kanyamala are present with our temple, this Kanchikamakshi, in her gentle (Saumya) form, gave darshan during the yagnas.
